690 Discussion / Re: The Quest for the Best Dual-Sport Tires
« on: August 17, 2015, 06:25:44 pm »
Sometimes it just happens no matter what tire you have.  Some rain, a smooth surface, etc.  Once a car had spilt some antifreeze, I didn't see it and I hit it and went sideways.  I found myself doing 'dirt maneuvers' on asphalt.  Thank goodness for the instinctive dirt reflexes, or I would have dumped it.  Every tire is going to have some drawback.

I can also vouch for the KTM windscreen, it is the cheapest at about $65 US and does a good job; it also is small enough to stay out of the way offroad.  Before I had the windshield riding at speed at 20F was no fun at all!  Cold wind right to the chest.  http://www.ktm-parts.com/AOMC/product/76508065000?gclid=Cj0KEQjwuqauBRDhnfvnxMvKy6UBEiQAmTLQu3FGwTbM4r2P0d08FSSj7AygK_q4S-NZou7MNoDyVmYaAsJz8P8HAQ

I don't know about anybody else, but it happened to me and the ignition remained on.  I certainly didn't try to turn the key off and on while descending the hill.  It didn't make me crash, but it was a little unnerving until I realized what was going on.  That was when I was in Colorado, the the mountains were huge.

The only time that the ABS light comes on is either when you start it or if you disengage it and then it will blink - other than that, it is off most of the time.

I put the FMF Q4 on this weekend; it's easy, it took maybe 15 minutes and bolted on just fine.

I really like the sound - just a sweet thrumming when riding but barks when you get on it.  I accidently did a big wheelie trying to see how loud I could get it to go!

It put the grrrr in the bike!

jrugg,

I was in Colorado Springs, but moved to Huntsville Alabama three weeks ago.  I guess I should change my name to 'Alabama adventurer'.

what coincidences!  I'm 55, have a 2014 690 and a 06 525 EXC!  You guys make my day.  I'm probably going to sell the EXC as the 690 does everything I need.

GPS and Navigation / Re: Mounting possibilities...

Garmin Monterra GPS mounting and wiring

1) Get a good waterproof electrical connector, I used the 'NEW Yiding 5 Kit 2 Pin Way Car Waterproof Electrical Connector Plug with Wire' that I found on ebay at http://www.ebay.com/itm/351192178070.  You need more than one so that you can make a plug for when the GPS is not connected.

2) Find the auxiliary 2 (ACC 2) connector behind the headlight - just remove the two bolts on the side the hold the cable clips on.  ACC 1 is always on, ACC 2 is only on when the bike is one.  The red is hot and the black is ground (actually black with a yellow tracer).

3)  Tie-wrap the female end of the plug to the bike fork - use another male end as a waterproof plug.

4) Solder the GPM mount wire to the male end of the plug and apply an insulator; I used shrink-wrap.

You don't need the yellow or blue wire to power the GPS, so I just bent those back under the shrink-wrap.  I also cut out the fuse since the circuit is fused in the fuse box.  I did keep the sound connection though I plan to use bluetooth; just in case I need it later.
