General Maintenance / Re: leaking fork seal
« on: December 12, 2015, 10:03:21 pm »
It worked good on my granddaughter's CRF250l. Make sure the fork has plenty of oil in it. When you slip the tool past the seal oil will flow out and help flush out the dirt. Then recheck your oil level. chip

Hear is how I solved the air filter problem. My objective was simple make the air filter easy to service an a trip and use the stock air box. The problem with the stock foam filter is it is bulky, hard to clean, and requires grease to seal it up ( messy).  I purchase Uni Filter green bulk foam ( bf-1) it is 65 ppi and 5/8 in thick. The after market filters are a courser foam.  I then cut out a foam piece the same shape as the stock filter adding 3/4 in all the away around. Oiled up the foam placed it over the air box inlet and bolted the cover on. Since they are just a flat piece of foam they are easy to clean and oil and and don't take up a lot room. I have used this filter for several thousand miles all over Nevada, Arizona, and Moab area of Utah. In dusty areas I service or replace the filter every other day. The bottom of after market air filters sits on the floor of the air box so air can't get through because of this I think my filters surface area is about the same. Because of how compact the oiled foam is when the lid is on no grease is needed.

The strip down the middle is size related. No strip on 140/80-18

Sprockets and Chains / Help finding a sprocket and chain length post.
« on: October 20, 2014, 08:45:59 am »
A few weeks back I ran across a post about chain link numbers and sprocket size. The author of the post was saying it was a good idea not to have the same chain link always hit the same tooth on the sprockets. The post had a link. I didn't follow the link but I think it had more information and a way to calculate chain length for sprocket sizes. Can anyone point me to the post or the link?  I'm not even sure what forum it was posted in. Chip

690 Pics / Re: 2014 KTM 690 Enduro R

I suspect the mileage will very greatly depending on altitude. I did 300mi in northern nevada with my granddaughter over Labor Day. She was on her CFR250L. The lowest section we did was over 5000ft. She got better then 90mpg and my 2013 690 got 67mpg. At home I get about 52mpg.  chip

Rusty,  What bike was the picture you posted from? The color of the rim makes me think it isn't your 690. could the suspension have something to do with the wear pattern.  Haven't had the problem on my 2013 690 running 21#. chip

Ride Announcements / Re: Texas Hill Country ~4/18-26

Hello Rusty,  At this point in my life it is not practical to come from California to Texas for a 2-3 day ride. Maybe some day.  If you lay out the route in Basecamp so you can load it into your Montana do you mind posting the file? And if you have a Spot keep it running and let us know your shared page. That way those of us who can't be there can enjoy your trip in absentia.  chip

GPS and Navigation / Re: GPS for the 690

Rusty
If one gets the iPhone that has cellular data and not just wifi it will have a GPS chip in it.  It is a very good chip set and works almost as good as my Garmins. It is the same as the iPad. I use the GPS in the iPad along with the Forflight app to fly all over the south west and Mexico.  chip

I use my iPhone with a Garmin app on my GS. It works well but does have some shortcomings.
1) It uses more then 1.2 amps when also using audio with the GPS. It needs the 2.1 amp adaptor.
2) the vibration is hard on the USB connector on the iPhone. The smaller iPhone 5 plug is better.
3) you can't create tracks on the iPhone for off road use. You can create routes for on road and limited off road use. You can create tracks in a program like Basecamp and email the track to your phone and open the attachment in the Scenic Map App.
4) you can't transfer routes or tracks to and
from Basecamp directly.
I understand you can create tracks in Google earth convert them to a file that Scenic Map can open but I haven't tried it yet. I use a Garmin Montana for off road.  chip
