General Maintenance / Re: Chain Tension

Pasomonte, check out the Youtube channel for Slavens Racing.  He has a good video on chain tension.  If you are going to change your shock spring, you can take care of both at the same time.

Lighting & Electrical / Re: no spark no faults no spark please help

Andrew, if you haven't fixed the problem yet, try a new battery.  I had an '09 690 Duke that stranded me 30 miles from home when the battery went bad.  The starter seemed to be cranking the engine like normal, but it just wouldn't start.  When I got the bike home I checked everything you did and when I tested the battery it was bad.  New battery installed and it started right up.

I hope this helps.

I think you can get decent starter maps from directly from Dynojet.

I love the Timeserts.  Much stronger than the Heli-coil.  The installation is slightly more involved and a little more expensive, but once done, you'll never have to worry about the repair coming undone.

690 Discussion / Re: New ktm parts?
« on: August 16, 2016, 03:46:11 pm »
While most of the performance parts are available through the KTM Hard Parts catalog at the KTM dealer, there are a lot of aftermarket companies which support this bike.  You should go to the "sweet mods and accessories" thread, in the "Technical" section", of this forum and you find a lot.  To name just a few:  Rotweiller Performance, CJ Design, Rally-Raid, Motominded, Scott's Performance, Zip-Ty Racing, Cox Racing, Bullet Proof Engineering, Touratech, Seat Concepts, FMF, Wings exhaust.

What Broke? / Re: Replacing Throttle Body with new version

Grant, you may look into the Tune ECU or Power Commander to "remap" your fuel injection/ignition.  From what I have read, this is what everyone else with pre-'14 bikes have done.  You will change way too much to upgrade to a '14-'16 system.  Also, the '14-'16 bikes have dual spark plugs and no SAS.  Even if you get all the parts, you'll still have to tweak the ignition and fuel map for your single spark plug.

I feel you pain brother.  Shame on KTM for not amending the engine break-in procedure and informing their dealers of the change.  I had to add half a quart of oil, a quarter of the distance through a long trip last year.  I used a semi-syn to see if it would help reduce the oil consumption.  It did.  The bike didn't need oil until I returned home from the trip, (2300 miles total).  The bike seems to be consuming oil within KTM's parameters now.

Good luck, and keep us posted.

Sweet Mods and Accessories / Re: Foot Pegs

I added the CJ Designs Peg extensions to my Pivot Pegs.  They work well and come in to sizes.  If you go this route and mount the extensions yourself, use a drill press with a vise to drill the mounting holes.  The Pivot Pegs are made of a really hard stainless steel.  CJ's will install them for you for $50. I installed mine w/o a drill press and it was almost a nightmare.

These engines all burn a little oil, but you have something else wrong.  I just did a trip from San Diego to Pike's Peak, to Grand Tetons, Yellowstone, Crater Lake, San Francisco and back.  I added about 1/4 of a quart of oil.  The Trip was 10 days and 4200 miles. How you break-in the engine will effect the engines oil consumption.

Airbox, Pipes, and Programmers / Re: Rottweiler Intake
« on: June 09, 2016, 04:49:44 pm »
River, have you done a fuel mileage check. I wouldn't think there would be much difference, if any. The only thing I'd be really worried about is dumping the bike in the water while on a trail or adventure ride.

Would you guys say that the increase in intake noise would not be annoying on long trips? I've read reviews on the KTM Power Parts EVO air box cover, and they said the increased noise was too much.

690 Discussion / Re: cam lobes, odd wear marks
« on: May 15, 2016, 01:01:48 pm »
Chef, thank you for the advice.  I've showed the pics to my local dealer's service dept. and they say the marks are from normal wear and not to worry about it.  However, I am skeptical and I asked them to contact their KTM tech-rep to get their opinion.  So its a waiting game right now.
