Starting a stalled bike in gear
« on: February 08, 2016, 08:13:27 pm »
Hi,
Anyone had a problem with starting a stalled bike. Used to be able to do it in gear with the clutch pulled in, now it has to be in neutral to fire up??!!
Anybody had a similar problem?
Ed

there's a switch linked to the clutch, probably at the lever?  i've seen other bikes that the switch gets gummed up/ dirty and it has the same effect as what you're describing.  it's either that or the switch isn't being engaged enough... or it's toast

Finally sorted the problem which might interest any of you who use the clutch.
There is a small plastic pin which moves through the clutch lever bracket and pushes on a contact switch when you squeeze the clutch lever. This either makes or breaks a circuit allowing you to start the bike in gear while the lever is held in.
I found that the plastic pin had actually worn down to a point where it wasn't long enough to make contact with the switch, which was working fine when I tested it in isolation.
I have replaced the pin with a 3mm diameter piece of nail, galvanised of course, and all well again.

I initially thought it would be the switch I would need to replace which is A$150! Ouch!

Interesting...

Mine has never started in gear.  I never thought anything of it and figured it was designed that way.  I'll have to fix it now that I know.

Thanks guys.
