2014 Oil leak
« on: May 21, 2014, 08:38:27 pm »
I've got about 700 miles on the bike now.  I did an oil change about 100 miles ago and everything was fine.  I did some 'sporting riding' last weekend (first time off-road), and notice an oil leak by the filter cover right above the oil filler cap.  I took it off and put it back but it still seems to leak.  The only seal is a O-ring and the bolts are evenly tight as well as the hose connection.  Weird, I guess it's time to call the dealer for warranty work.  If it weren't under warranty, I would probably just put some silicone on it.

The pic is before I cleaned it up and put it back.

Weird.  I wonder if the clutch cover is warped/bent?  Thank goodness it's under warranty--as long as you don't get some band-aid solution from the dealer.

I googled it and couldn't find another mention of 690's having an oil leak problem, so you may have a very rare, defective part.  If a new o-ring doesn't fix it, demand a new clutch cover.

You didn't smack the clutch cover on anything did you?  If there's any mark AT ALL, they'll put it on you.  I had to pay for my new clutch cover because it was rubbing on my clutch internals after a mild crash.

If that's the case, I suggest the following:

Hah; well I did have a mild slow-speed crash on my off road ride.  I was going up a steep hill (no trail) going around a lot of tree stumps and found myself going straight into about a 3" tree.  I braced for impact and...rode right through it as it was totally rotten and crumbled.  I was so surprised that I decided to fall over at that point.

I did find this link for a SMC and it sounds similar:

I did have a similar problem on a ATV once and a fatter/new o-ring fixed that; I'll try it and let the forum know.

The new o-ring seems to have done the trick; you would have thought that the oil filter would have come with one.  I just took it around the block, but no leak so far.  I did use the advice from the SMC website and put a little grease around the o-ring grove before I put the seal in; that seems to help it fit tighter.  I also noticed that the old o-ring had a slightly different consistency than the new o-ring, it seemed to be harder and a little smaller; it could have been from the engine heat.  Anyway I found the new o-rings at Lowe's, two for $.89 cents. :)

lol, who would have thought Lowes would have KTM parts. I bet if you had went to the dealer the decimal point would move a little

One of the best things you can do with any bike you buy, new or old, is to run a spanner over it and check all the torques.
