TAT in August - What's gonna break?
« on: May 12, 2016, 02:35:07 am »
Have a 2014 and 2015 KTM 690 Enduro doing the TAT leaving August 15th.  What's gonna break and what spares should we take?  Looking at replacing and upgrading tank bolts.  Heard some bad things about the fuel pump.  Is it still a problem with the 14's and 15's??  Center stand from Lost Dog Products is in the mail to my house now.  It will aid in fixing stuff on the trail.  Has anyone had clutch issues with these bikes?  Our bikes have 3900 and 6800 miles on them at present time.   Any advice is welcome.  We will be starting with fresh rubber and fluids.

Good luck - I'm riding the TAT on August 27th - but from the West coast headed east (I hope) - I'll hi-five you as we pass each other and give you any updates on the trail ahead!  Drz400 and the 690 - look for us!
I am interested in how the center stand looks after you install it - mainly how low it protrudes/hangs down below the skid plate.

As far as parts - I have a fuel filler 'filter' to hopefully 'help' with any gunk.  Do you have the stock fuel filler?   I would suggest changing it to the KTM twins or CJ Designs one.
I just checked my plugs & valves and plan on replacing all fluids prior.  My bike has about 3k miles.

Just installed CJ Designs fuel filler and I'm gonna check and see if the filter sock will work with it.  The 2014 bike has it but he thinks it's mounted under the filler mount.  Have to look and see.  Also installed Tusk rear rack from rockymountainmcatv.  Nice and sturdy for $80.  Gonna put rotopax 1.75 gal gas on it.  Gonna start a blog at some point to keep folks updated on the ride and we can figure out where we will come across each other.  How are you navigating?  We are using GPSKevins gps files.  Hope we don't get into any trouble.  What tires are you starting with?  We are gonna start with MOTOZ Tractionator Desert H/T front and back on the 690's.  They don't make a 17" for the rear of the DR650's.

I am using the 'official' maps/gps information from Sam.   I heard too many bad things about gpskevins routes.  We have a Garmin Montana 690t and an older Garmin Map60cs as back up.
I currently have the Motoz tractionator I/T and love it, might try the H/T or Desert.  Pirelli Scorpion Rally Dual Sport Front Motorcycle Tire (Part# 1537300001) up front right now and seem to like it.  I understand the Goldentyre Gt216 is a good tire also http://www.goldentyre.com/en/dt_portfolio/gt-216-front/  just not sure I want to 'try' a new tire for something like the TAT.  I might stick with the Pirelli up front.   I used the MT-21 front /rear in 2013 when I did TN-AR section of the tat in 2013 but we wore them down pretty quick though :-(   too much throttle perhaps??
Getting (hopefully) the MoskoMoto R80 bags, using a Geigerrig Ballistic 1200 for hydration/backpack http://www.geigerrig.com/,  have Perun's tank bolts and rear rack, AdventureSpec skid and case savers, redoing suspension in June (after we head to Hatfield for a weekend of riding!), replacing ALL fluids, new brake pads.  Changed out the orange fuel filler filter for one from Guglatech Filtermaster http://www.guglatech.com/wordpress/en_GB/    seems to allow better fueling (faster and doesn't overflow as bad - which is what pissed me off about the twinair orange one!).   Plan on using trufuel cans to carry extra fuel (my friend uses the premix in his mowers/chainsaw etc, so we are just using the cans and filling with pump gas)  same capacity as the MSR type bottles etc, but not $32 each! and disposable when we are done.  (http://www.homedepot.com/p/TruSouth-Trufuel-50-1-Pre-Oil-Mix-6525638/202532877   but NOT the premix of course)

Yep, got the twin air filter sock for gas cap.  Haven't tried filling up at a gas station yet, but filling with a can did not go well.  Overflows, backs up too easily.  Also got the upper and lower tank bolt upgrades, but haven't installed them yet.  Going to get KTM World in Cedartown, GA to do the suspension in a couple of weeks and will let them install when putting it back together.  Also got the Blackhawk tank bag, foam filter conversion installed, both short and long stainless steel oil filters (not installed yet) with magnetic washer for filter.    Oh, Cycleops H-4 LED CREE 3800 lumen high/low bulb that makes a world of difference.  front fender bag.   Tusk rear rack.

All I broke on TAT is my right fibula at the top of the boot just outside of Green River, UT.  We also stayed on Sams route.  Sorry we missed ya'll.  My other three riders finished.  Also sprained my ankle really bad.  Happened on Aug 29th and still hurts.  Hope ya'lls ride went well.

Randy - I have Konflict Motorsports did my suspension - great dealing with Alex (the owner).  Great service before, during and after - he even called to see how my ride went and how the bike handled etc.

What broke on the TAT..... #1 issue - Fuel injector. Ukltra Heavy duty rear innertube and then the patch used to fix it the first time!  (never using an ultra heavy duty tube again)   Oh, and a strap on my saddle bag, which resulted in bag making contact with rear wheel and wearing a hole in the bag!   3277 miles - 1 airfilter with 3 prefilters

Probably nothing will break.  Apply thread locker "medium strength" to every fastener you can get to and use a torque wrench when reinstalling.  If you feel like it lube the suspension linkage where you can.  Should be a great trip.  On the IBCDR last year 690s were the bike of choice as far as I could tell.  Lots of them.
