thermostat switch that kicks fan on at 190 F
« on: November 13, 2014, 07:19:44 pm »
I saw someone post this on facebook and thought I'd share. I will be doing this soon. Thanks Joe.

Just want to share some info with everyone that took me a good amount if time to find out ... Your 690 fan kicks on when your rad temp gets to 221 F . In my option and many others it should kick on earlier. Ktmtwins sells and upgraded thermostat switch that kicks fan on at 190 F and they sell a ton. Their switch it 55$ + shipping . Now If you go to any advanced auto you can get the same switch with a LIFETIME warranty for 36$ and if you order it threw their website for store pick up you get an additional 20% off with the code P20. My local store had one in stock so it was way more convenient to have it right away also

I just wonder why KTM put in a high temp fan switch? I mean geez these KTM engineers probably know more about the 690 engine then most of us.. (me anyways lol) so whats up you think?

Apparently engine temp needs to be high enough to 'burn' off crap and pass emissions.....   something something something.....    8)

I'll be changing my thermostat switch this weekend.....never changed one before. I'm looking for directions on torque ? What about sealing the threads?
thanks ::)

For me the easiest way to change it was to lay bike on its left side, like it is taking a nap. I also used a little Teflon tape just because I was a little nervous about relying on the small o-ring sealing it. If you have everything close at hand when you pull the old one out you loose very little fluid. On mine the stock fan came on about 210 and shut off at 195 ish. Now it comes on at 190 and shuts off at around 170. I use an infrared temp meter but I was not very attentive after the install so my readings are a little off but the point is it comes on and shuts off sooner. Which is what I was after.

I bought this plug months ago and it's still sitting in my parts bin.  I wish somebody would do something about how lazy I am! ;D

I did it and I'm glad I did. My bike runs cooler now.  I don't have a catalytic converter anymore so I don't need all that heat.  I was getting worried about shutting it down last summer before the mod because it was reading almost all the way to the top.  Now it runs around 3/4 of the scale.

I have two of these low temp switches waiting on some Zip Ty second generation waterless coolant to arrive, I will R & R the switch and change the coolant on both my bike and wife's bike.  I used the 1st generation in our Husky 511 and 310 - both known to run hot.  We run our bikes often in the desert heat, low speed, technical rides that should boil our coolant, but I have never had a boil over or lost a drop of this coolant from boil over.  Also supposed to be very corrosion resistant for 7+ years - no flushing needed for 7+ years.

I think if a guy is going to change the switch - makes sense to switch the coolant as well.  This stuff boils at like 350 degrees~

Anybody ever use Evans coolant in one of these beasts? I use it in my XR650R and it has been problem free. Been wanting to do this thermostat swap on the 690 and I have enough Evans left to swap out the coolant with it. Any reason I shouldn't?

Do the swap! :D

It takes a few minutes and I didn't lose any noticeable coolant. Just lay the bike on it's side, unscrew the old and quickly replace it with the new. Mods are rarely this easy, cheap, and useful... a must do imo.

Can any of you provide the Advance Auto part number for the switch being discussed? The original post's image is not there anymore. I've been scouring Advance Auto's website and see several that look the same as the one offered on KTM Parts, except for color of the plastic part. But the specs do not tell the turn on/off temperatures.

Thanks,
JET
