New owner of a '13 model in Minnesota
« on: September 23, 2015, 02:11:39 pm »
I just picked up a 2013 690 Enduro last night.    So far, I've noticed a couple of things.     The muffler is very loud, an FMF Q4.   I'm hoping I can get a quiet insert or something for it.    It already has a skidplate and luggage rack, but I'll need to get bark busters and radiator guards.     It has a Touratech seat on it, I'll have to put a few more miles on it to decide if I like it or not.     I'm also hoping to add some gas capacity, I'm thinking about a 1 gallon Rotopax, mounted to the luggage rack.     The bike has about 11,000 miles so I guess I'll have to check the valve clearances this winter.    It has street oriented tires on it now, so I'm thinking of either MT-21's or Kenda big blocks.

Next spring I plan to sell my KLR 650 and my KLX 400 (DRZ 400) and maybe even my 650 Versys.

I don't suppose anyone has any suggestions for me?

Another gas option is the Rally Raid side mounted tank. It allows you to have the gas w/o taking away storage on the rear rack. If possible, find the stock muffler. It weighs a lot but is quiet. Enjoy your 690!

I'm pretty sure FMF had a quiet (relatively) insert for the Q4.  My wife and I don't find it too loud for our tastes, but does have a bark if you get on it!

I love this bike and I hope you bond with your bike too!  This thing is stable and predictable - just a joy to ride.  I recommend the Scott's steering damper for mud and sand.

Thanks, guys.   I first have to determine if my FMF Q4 already has a quiet insert or not.   That Rally Raid tank looks great but it's really expensive!

Welcome to the 690 club! The stock muffler weighs 5 pounds more then an FMF Q4 & gets very hot. Somethings to consider. The Rally Raid tank also adds more weight & gives the bike a bulky unplanned look IMHO. With a bit of planning your 3.2 gallons should take you just about anywhere. Gas stations are all over in the USA!  I have gone 164 miles on 3 gallons with this bike.
Nut up or shut up!

Yes, the 3.2 gallons will probably be enough in the US, but I do take regular trips to Mexico and will need to carry extra gas.

Thanks
