New Member with a 16' that burns oil like CRAZZZZYYYY!!!
« on: July 14, 2016, 02:24:10 pm »
Hello everyone,

New to this forum.

I purchased my 690 Enduro R 3 months ago and have about 1,500 miles already on it. Love the bike, however it has seemingly burned almost 4 liters of oil since I've owned it in 3 months!!! Taking it to the dealer next week to see about some warranty work  ::)

I also have a 2015 1290 Super Duke R. That bike has been flawless and has about 5,000 miles on it.

Look forward to hanging around the forum.

FYI I'm also an engine builder/tuner at Attack Performance in Huntington Beach. I've worked on the 690's and have tuned both the 690 and 1290 here on our dyno.

Just wanted to stop in and say hello!

These engines all burn a little oil, but you have something else wrong.  I just did a trip from San Diego to Pike's Peak, to Grand Tetons, Yellowstone, Crater Lake, San Francisco and back.  I added about 1/4 of a quart of oil.  The Trip was 10 days and 4200 miles. How you break-in the engine will effect the engines oil consumption.

Bike goes to the dealer today. I've monitored the oil consumption with pictures of the odometer, sight glass empty, sight glass filled, and the measured amount out of a fresh liter of oil what it took to top off the bike. I just burned through 1 liter of Motorex in 150 miles!!!

We will see what KTM will do to resolve the issue. My guess is a top end rebuild...

Strange, a liter every 150 miles (aprox 3 gal gas) which works out to 12:1! You certainly would not need photos of a sight glass to prove your point because you wouldn't be able to see the sight glass through all the smoke. For me something doesn't add up.

Bike is not smoking. As soon as you get off the machine all you can smell is burning oil. Capacity is only 1.7 liters. It's been doing it since day one. Even the break-in oil was getting consumed. There are no leaks from the engine except for some oil in the air box (small amount) and there is a few drops of oil dripping from the intake manifold boot to the throttle body.

The bike has consumed so much oil its crazy. I was going to perform a leak down test on the engine, but decided there is no reason to since the machine is covered under warranty. There is no question the engine is consuming the oil. I have lots of photos to prove that. Very interested to see how KTM takes care of the problem. Dropping the bike off after work.  ::)

Dropped off the bike last night. I know the dealership very well as our shop does a lot of business with them. I also know the two mechanics that will be working on the bike. They took my submitted photos and said they will do the standard things like compression/leak down test and see how KTM advises them to proceed. I should know what is up I'm told by the weekend........

Dealership confirmed that the bike has excessive leak down past the piston rings. I've told them that since the get-go... Picking up the bike to flog this weekend and mount some new rubber. They will contact me when to bring it back in for repair. Bike is mint. Hopefully the dealership mechanics took care of her well. Being an engine builder and a professional mechanic I cringe thinking of anybody working on my machines except for myself. ::)

Picked up the bike yesterday. Turns out KTM told the tech the 6% leakdown was good and they won't warranty anything until there is 4k miles on the odometer. Also they want me to switch back to dinosaur blood for oil. They said the bike will never "break in" fully if you don't run the dinosaur blood in the engine to 4k miles! Well, I'm sure I'm not the only one that has put full synthetic Motorex in the bike at the first oil change over 600 miles... They don't state this in the owners/service manual, but say this is the reason for the excessive oil burning. They also stated that it is within tolerance to consume 1cc of oil per mile. That is an insane amount to burn! I told them that if at 4k miles the bike is still consuming copious amounts of oil I will be back immediately. I also told them KTM should supply me the oil as I've already wasted over $100 in oil that has been burned. They agreed immediately. We will see what happens in the next 2300 miles.

Anyways just wanted to let the community know of the issue which is already known and of what KTM has said and what KTM is willing to do...

Atttack_690:

You sir have an outstanding ability to control your anger.  I'd be livid if "they" left me hanging, not knowing what the rules "will be" to obtain KTM Warranty Service at 4,000 miles.  I'd wager most of the folks on this forum won't put 4K on the bike over the whole first year.

I sure hope this turns out well for you.

I'm doing exactly as they recommended. We will see how the conflict is finally resolved. I ride a lot and since I've been building my 1290 I've only been riding the 690R. I'll keep everyone updated. Look forward to being a part of this forum.

I feel you pain brother.  Shame on KTM for not amending the engine break-in procedure and informing their dealers of the change.  I had to add half a quart of oil, a quarter of the distance through a long trip last year.  I used a semi-syn to see if it would help reduce the oil consumption.  It did.  The bike didn't need oil until I returned home from the trip, (2300 miles total).  The bike seems to be consuming oil within KTM's parameters now.

How many miles are on your 690? What year is your 690? Also how many miles does it take to burn 1 liter of oil?

Thanks for the replies.

I'm switching to the Motorex Sportmax 10w50 as recommended this week. I made KTM pay for 6 liters of oil. We will see what the consumption is like then. I'm also going to put the bike on the dyno to see the difference in HP with that oil. (Cool thing about having a dyno at your disposal is you can test parts all the time  ;D)

Picked up the 10w50 Sportmax (Mineral Based) oil KTM wanted me to run for the next 2,000 miles to get the rings to seat (Made KTM pay for 6 liters). Changed the oil last night. I recorded the odometer reading and took pictures again showing no oil in the window. Time to keep copious notes for the next several weeks to see how the consumption is going for warranty. KTM stated at 4k miles they will warranty the rings if the bike is still consuming copious amounts of oil  ::) I just want to let the community know in case someone else has the same issues and what KTM plans on doing about it...
