Sluggish Starting
« on: April 22, 2016, 10:32:53 pm »
Hello all,
I recently purchased a new 2016 690.  Often, especially when bike is cold, the starter turns slowly as though the battery is about to die.   I checked the battery voltage and it is always fine at 12.9 vdc when not running and 14 vdc when running.  I even took the battery out and charged it, but it would not take additional charge.
Also, during those times when it is sluggish to start, the FI light will illuminate and stay solid for 2 or 3 seconds after starting.   Anyone else experience these issues?

Hi,

Recently I forgot to turn my GPS off and drained the battery.  I used a jump pack to start it.  One of those little Li-Ion jobs... once started you have to remove it or the voltage from the charging system will kill it.  Once I unplugged it the bike would start running rough and the FI light would be illuminated.

I charged the battery and got the bike started.  It has been fine ever since.

My experience leads me to believe that you may have a bad cell in you battery.  It will still read full voltage but when a load is placed on it the battery doesn't have enough storage (amp hours?) to keep up.

I would take the battery somewhere that it can be load banked.  It will probably turn up that the battery is bad.

Thanks for the response.  I thought that could very well be the case.  I did my best to also check for loose connections at the starter and grounding connections.  I have appointment at local dealer and plan to suggest faulty battery as a possibility, so thanks for the affirmation.

Just got off the phone with dealer who after keeping it for several days, says everything checks out normal   Service manager says that if it happens to be on compression stroke when you go to start it, this will happen. I call BS on this, but decided I probably don't want my bike in that shop any longer.  I suppose I will check with another dealer.

the best thing you can do is change your battery with a new and good one. say to your dealer to replace the old battery. this will keep your bike in a good and well maintained way. check this guide too it might help you.
