On my 990 I have done some very long rides with the renazco racing seat and raised bars and did not get fatigued. On my 2014 690 I did 160 miles with a seat concepts seat and could not wait to get off the bike. For me, it seems just to lite for serious slab miles. Just thinking about powering down the klondike's endless miles makes me shutter.
You guys who can stay comfy for hours on slab with the 690 are a true bread. Don't get me wrong though, I would take it in a minute across America On the TAT.

690 Discussion / Re: Finally back on ADV!
« on: February 10, 2016, 08:40:05 pm »
In the Joe Mamma section of ADVrider, I made the mistake of taking a stance against the cartels in Mexico. I linked to a hidden camera in the AZ desert, filming highly armed nationals with night vision smuggling tons of drugs into America. I mentioned a rather violent way of dealing with them and that was all it took....Banned for life! Not 30 days or a slap on the wrist, but a full on life long ban.
Joe Mamma is basically the free for all section where everyone eventually turns into a donkey's rear end. More arguing and put downs than any othe forum I've ever seen. I had over 1500 posts and a lot in the mechanical sections for the 990 adventure plus ride reports.

I'm still banned 6+ years later. Pleading emails did nothing.  I still view it every day following my fav epic ride reports.

Good mirrors but need to be folded in while off road.

What Broke? / Re: Brake Return Spring snapped
« on: November 15, 2015, 02:56:27 pm »
After 45 minutes of cursing the spring installment methods I was trying, I finally figured out the quick n easy method.

Get on your knees and say goodby to your knee bones. Take the spring by hand and come up under the lower hole from under the bike. Slide the spring end into the top of the lower hole, then push up on spring body while also directing to a forward position facing the front of the bike. At the same time use your fingers or pliers to seat the spring into the lower hole. Your spring should now be wedged facing forward ready to grab with needle nose pliers.
As you work the spring into the upright position the bottom will seat into the hole. Now the top spring opening should be facing the top spring hole on the brake lever. Grab it with needle nose and pull up and shove the end into the hole. Once in, use your finger to snap it all the way in. Total time about 3 minutes. Have fun as you all will be doing it sooner than later.

GPS and Navigation / Re: Using a Smartphone as a GPS
« on: November 14, 2015, 07:56:44 pm »
One reason I would hesitate using a smart phone for a GPS on the bike is because they're fragile. Second reason I would hesitate is because they're all touch control. I like the GPS that has buttons on it because when you have gloves on, touch control does not work worth a damn and you end up switching screens when you least want it to happen. Dedicated GPS unites 99% of the time always work, while smart phones are computers that freeze and exhibit other computer problems. Also, smart phone power connections are flimsy compared to a good GPS. When discussing maps, gps topos are all crap as they all come from the same 3rd party vendor who has the exact same mistakes and missing roads while smart phones have an much broader choice of world wide topo maps. I use my smart phone when off-roading in my 4x4 and GPS on my bike. I transfer all tracks, routes, campgrounds, beer stops and more between both devices.

KTM uses this same spring on many of their bikes. It's crap and way to short for the 690 to be stable. I just bought 3 because they don't last past a few hundred miles. They break due to stress as they are always under tension. I'm going to source a slightly longer spring. My other bikes have much less strong springs that last for years.

What Broke? / Re: Tank Bolt Replacement Walkthrough
« on: November 13, 2015, 09:13:02 pm »
I just did tank bolt replacement using Perun Moto bolt replacement kit. Good stuff and Nikola gets it out the door promptly. 2014 bikes still have this issue.

Remove air box, battery, all plastic, loosen top bolts, use an impact gun on left side bottom torq bolt, remove bottom bolt completely, unhook gas line by battery then lift tank up from rear. Keep lofted using tie downs to handlebars. Remove rubber grommets on tank bottom, install new grommets and stainless tube, lower tank down into place. You may need to file the stainless tube to fit. Install new bolts and torq to 10nm. Now, replace top bolts using loctite blue. Tighten to 15nm. Oh don't forget to remove exhaust bolts on top and where it fits into exhaust pipe. Put exhaust bolts back in when finished to 25nm.

It's a complete pain in the arse but worth the worry free results.

What Broke? / Bent frame or deformed tank problem
« on: November 13, 2015, 03:33:15 pm »
Looking straight on at my 2014 690 from the rear, my license plate is sitting off to the right side. Left side is lower than right side. I replaced all the tank bolts with the Perrun kit. I looked over all the plastic parts and found no problem. So I had to add washers under the hand hold bolts on the left side to get it almost straight. I have less than 800 miles on this bike and most was your average easy off roading. The rear end has smacked into the usual hidden rock or tree root, but nothing fearce enough to bend the frame. I'm thinking maybe the tank is deforming considering I ride from sea level to 13,000 feet and gas expands significantly. Maybe I permanently warped the tank.

Oh, I also broke the break lever spring

Thoughts anyone?
