Racks & Luggage / Re: Does a 2017 need the beefier tank bolts?
« on: February 15, 2017, 02:56:09 pm »
Not sure, but I would do it anyway!
My I suggest these vs. the rally raid.
Great guy to deal with and has a few other goodies for the the 690's!   I have the enduro luggage rack, heel guards and the tank bolts - all top notch stuff

Is this an organized ride / route?  like a dualsport ride, or just ride wherever you can find a track?

What Broke? / Re: TAT in August - What's gonna break?

Randy - I have Konflict Motorsports did my suspension - great dealing with Alex (the owner).  Great service before, during and after - he even called to see how my ride went and how the bike handled etc.

What broke on the TAT..... #1 issue - Fuel injector. Ukltra Heavy duty rear innertube and then the patch used to fix it the first time!  (never using an ultra heavy duty tube again)   Oh, and a strap on my saddle bag, which resulted in bag making contact with rear wheel and wearing a hole in the bag!   3277 miles - 1 airfilter with 3 prefilters

I just did the TAT (eastbound) this Aug/Sept on my '14 690.  Great bike for it.  I did have issues with the fuel injector clogging though - despite using a prefilter at the fuel filler opening.  Not sure what the heck caused the blockage!
I also used the MoskoMoto Rackless 80 saddle bags.
Not sure what you are planning on using as far as skid plates, hand guards etc... but there are a few folks on here that can speak up on what they have.
feel free to ask questions/suggestions etc about the bike or the TAT.

I recall reading somewhere that the fuel pump from a vespa is the same thing - less than $30 on ebay.   I have not researched (yet), sorry.

Which battery did you go with and what is this battery relocation you speak of ?  :-)

Lighting & Electrical / Replacement 12v battery?

Strange thing today.....   Have not ridden the bike in a few weeks (that sucks) - but it started fine this morning and rode it to work.  Tried to go to lunch and wouldn't crank.  After 30 mins of messing around trying to figure out why, found it was the battery!  All lights came on, all fuses ok etc.
First I got a "dat 14" error.  Could not figure out what the heck that was.   Tried it again a few mins later and finally saw 'soft 4.1  dat 14' on the dash.  Looked that up to find it was related to low battery.    Managed to jumped it and rode home to put it on the batteryminder charger.
SO....   thoughts on why it would start in the morning and not at lunchtime?   Temps this am in the mid 50's, lunchtime low 70's.

SO (#2) ......   replace with similar battery, OR switch over to Lithium iron?   Was looking those up and almost fell out of my chair.  $170-$220 for the battery and I will need to get another charger - $70-100.  OEM battery is 7lbs, Lithium iron batts are 2.2lbs or so.   saving almost 5lbs
Was looking at the earthX and Shorai batteries.

Suggestions / comments?

I am using the 'official' maps/gps information from Sam.   I heard too many bad things about gpskevins routes.  We have a Garmin Montana 690t and an older Garmin Map60cs as back up.
I currently have the Motoz tractionator I/T and love it, might try the H/T or Desert.  Pirelli Scorpion Rally Dual Sport Front Motorcycle Tire (Part# 1537300001) up front right now and seem to like it.  I understand the Goldentyre Gt216 is a good tire also  just not sure I want to 'try' a new tire for something like the TAT.  I might stick with the Pirelli up front.   I used the MT-21 front /rear in 2013 when I did TN-AR section of the tat in 2013 but we wore them down pretty quick though :-(   too much throttle perhaps??
Getting (hopefully) the MoskoMoto R80 bags, using a Geigerrig Ballistic 1200 for hydration/backpack,  have Perun's tank bolts and rear rack, AdventureSpec skid and case savers, redoing suspension in June (after we head to Hatfield for a weekend of riding!), replacing ALL fluids, new brake pads.  Changed out the orange fuel filler filter for one from Guglatech Filtermaster    seems to allow better fueling (faster and doesn't overflow as bad - which is what pissed me off about the twinair orange one!).   Plan on using trufuel cans to carry extra fuel (my friend uses the premix in his mowers/chainsaw etc, so we are just using the cans and filling with pump gas)  same capacity as the MSR type bottles etc, but not $32 each! and disposable when we are done.  (   but NOT the premix of course)

Good luck - I'm riding the TAT on August 27th - but from the West coast headed east (I hope) - I'll hi-five you as we pass each other and give you any updates on the trail ahead!  Drz400 and the 690 - look for us!
I am interested in how the center stand looks after you install it - mainly how low it protrudes/hangs down below the skid plate.

As far as parts - I have a fuel filler 'filter' to hopefully 'help' with any gunk.  Do you have the stock fuel filler?   I would suggest changing it to the KTM twins or CJ Designs one.
I just checked my plugs & valves and plan on replacing all fluids prior.  My bike has about 3k miles.

Time for another great dualsport ride in June - Mill Hall / Lockhaven PA
Durty Dabbers Dualsport is June 4 & 5, 2016
They just posted up the flier - Well organized and mapped out event.   One of the best events on the east coast, if not in the states!

Adventure route as well as the regular route - which is easily handled by the 690.  Be weary of the river crossing though! (thank goodness it is an optional hero section again this year - if they have it)
