Hey guys, I'm loving this bike! It's 2015 and I just went over the 5k km. I noticed the engine oil is down though. After my first service at 1000 when they changed it until now has been 4000 km. is this par for the course or is it burning too much oil?
-
My 2014 started to burn a little oil after its first oil change. I didn't use the 10w-60 weight oil that it came with from the factory. Instead I used 10w-50. Then took the bike on a long ride from So-Cal to Utah. At my third gas stop I checked the oil noticed that it was right at the low mark. I found a bike shop and refilled with 5w-40 semi-synthetic and it didn't burn oil for the rest of the trip. There is another post, somewhere on this forum about oil consumption, and the "poster" said he switched to a straight petroleum oil to help the rings seat and it seemed to take care of the problem, then switched back to synthetic or semi-synthetic at the next oil change.
It may be that some of our bikes need a longer run-in period to properly seat the rings. I chose the 5w-40 weight after reading the post about oil viscosity (on the cafe husky forum) and how the mfg's. choose oils for their vehicles.

Hey! Thanks for the response. I'm not bad at riding bikes, but understanding the workings isn't my strong point ;) (standard physicist, knows everything, can't do anything) so this is most likely a "seating" issue? And my best bet is to try some 5w40? Would that be a total oil change or a top up with that type of oil? Also, if I just kept topping it up with 10w60 will it eventual "seat"? Lol I obvs don't know what I'm talking about. Any help would be great, oh and I couldn't find that other post on here. Thanks.

I just topped mine up with a semi-synthetic and it seems to have worked. The viscosity shouldn't matter, but it's easier to top up than to do a complete change. See how it goes. If it doesn't change then do a complete change with a full petroleum or semi-synthetic. I happened to use Yamalube (Yamaha) 5w-40 semi-synthetic, under $10/qt. Here are those links I mentioned about oil:

You know, I too noticed significant oil usage after the first oil change. I stuck with the 10-60 expensive stuff and kept an eye on it. But now at around 5k miles I don't seem to being having much of a problem with it. Oh, sure it burns a little, but its not raising warning flags like it did after that first oil change. Good info guys. Thx.

Hey! Thanks for the info and Bartiloni did you oil change it at 5k or just top it up??
-
Hey guys,
So I am still having problems with the oil consumption. I gave it an oil change and measured 1.7L of 10w60, it came right up to the top notch on the oil window. After another 1500km, I have to lean the bike way over to see it in the oil window. I think the next step is to top it up with 5 w40 semi synth. Ay recommendations ? I am at 6500km total.
-
Well, if u got to lean it WAY over to see it you might be straight up burning it non-stop. I'd check the compression from the engine. Is it smoking at all? :P
-
How do I check the compression from the engine? So I set it up level and I had to add 500mL + bringing it back up to the top of level of the window. Here's the kicker.. I had only gone 1500km! The bikes is running so nice when I ride it, but there is something seriously wrong with that much consumption. I think I need the compression test and maybe a leak down test done? Should I talk to KTM? What do you guys think?
-
I wouldn't touch it without trying to have it looked at under warranty first.
-
yep, mine is using some oil too, about 4000 miles on her, I run redline oil
-
Unless your bike is smoking a lot I wouldn't worry about it. These bikes ALL burn oil. If someone tells you different it's BS or they just don't ride enough to know. I'm at over 16,000 miles on my 14' 690 & it's burned oil since day 1. Not enough to leave a smoke trail but after about 1000 miles of hard riding I will be down 6 to 8 ounces. Put in a whole 2 quarts at your oil change & you wont have to top off as often.
-
yep, no big deal
-
Crazy. I would be spooked to be losing that much oil. I wouldn't ever go on any of my longer journeys if I knew I was burning oil like that. I suppose you could just carry a quart with u if u knew your rate of loss reliably.... But still. It's the premise. I don't think I've ever lost oil like that before except once when the valve guides on my 530 was leaking. U could tell though cuz of the splooge from the pipe. Anyways, to each their own when it comes to remedies for their bike. I just feel fortunate enough to have this website and y'all to fall back on for advice. Good luck bro.

burning a small amount of oil is acceptable, but not the amount some people here mention... and why do some and not others, seems a huge quality control issue... I have a friend who had a new piston/rings and barrell installed as his bike was burning 500mls of oil in 1000ks... to much.. and no smoke trail... and of course running KTM's recommeded Motorex oil... hmmmmm
-
The only time I noticed oil consumption was when I didn't torque the oil fill plug to correct spec. There's two oil filters, two oil screens, a drain plug, a fill plug, the two crank case covers, and they're all supposed to be to spec. How the motor was broken in makes a difference, how it's ridden... there are quite a few variables but bottom line, I agree, $11k dirt bikes shouldn't leak a drop and it sucks for those that are experiencing the issue.

Running 2 to 2.2 liters works just fine. Does not spit oil out the air cleaner.
More oil is better than less oil.
I still change every 600 miles + or -.
Good Luck.

Check your manual on this but I think the accepted oil consumption on the 690 is 1 liter per 1000miles. I think that's way too much even for the first few thousand miles. My engine was consuming oil too but just a little. I needed to rebuild the entire engine for another reason. I did all the work myself so I know the engine very well. The piston top was pretty much covered in a layer of carbon. Whether from the worn valve seals or rings I have no idea. But the bike did not smoke according to riders behind me over the 16K miles. During the rebuild I hand honed the barrel with a scratch pad in a semi-circular/downward motion. The top end got new rings and valve seals just because I was in there. I just completed the WABDR and over the 1100 miles it consumed 0.04 liters of 10w-60 Motul oil. Yes, I really did measure it after draining.
Why some engines consume so much is beyond my comprehension. Everyone does break-in differently. I'm sure KTM knows how to do it best. I just rode it normally. Cold engine/hot engine. Various RPMs, some on paved country roads, some on highways, more on dirt roads and single track. I will say that the for at least the early air-boxes they were prone to leak dirty air before filtration. I had to silicone seal the filter frame / airbox interface and I also grease the filter and make sure the airbox / throttle body clamp is firmly secured. Dirty air can ruin rings quickly.
