Title: Seat cover install tip!
Post by: Rockitboy on January 19, 2015, 04:22:17 pm
My Seat Concepts seat is one of my favorite upgrades for my dear Katie.. Yeah, I call my bike Katie, dont judge me! Lots of us have installed a comfy seat & lots of us have broken seat pans.. I think the problem is when you install a new cover the extra staples weaken the edges of the pan. The pan is glass filled ABS which is very hard material but also fractures easily. If you've taken off your cover you have seen all the fractured plastic bits that get broken out by the staples. So instead of staples I glued it on.  Glass filled ABS bonds rather well to most cover materials with cyanoacrylate (super glue). I used a hobby grade medium viscosity with some kicker to speed up the curing. Im sure some store brand super glue would work fine too. I have over 7k miles on my glued seat cover with no problems.

Over the years I have made many a motorcycle seat fit my buttocks but the seat is some sort of mid evil device on the 690. The seat base is problematic being it is fiber based as it does not like any kind of staples I have used. So short of blowing holes in it with my air stapler, which is the problems Seat Concepts had, you have sparked my interest in using a form of super glue. So I was wondering where you acquired the materials to do your seat.
Thanks

Any hobby store will have it. Tower Hobbies, Horizon Hobby or you can find it on eBay. The medium thickness works best. Use some kicker to cure it instantly. The kicker is also called accelerator or activator.

Thanks, I have been reading up on the Cyanoacrylate Glue and Activator spray and it seems rather straight forward. I am assuming that you used the Glue on the cover and the activator spray on the seat pan. After looking at the seat pan closely, I can see that either way will work but was wondering which way you used. I would like to avoid any mistakes if possible as this stuff is a one time deal. Thanks again.

I put a bit of glue on the cover & pan. Once its in place spray on the activator. If the glue even smells the vapor of that stuff it gets hard so be sure when you spray it your in place! Acetone will dissolve cyano. but it also dissolves ABS plastic so its really only good for getting it off your fingers..

3M trim adhesive. Available at any auto parts store. It is what we used to put vinyl roofs on cars back in the day. Two coats on the vinyl and the seat, let it dry between coats. Before you put it on make sure it feels dry to the touch. Let's you reposition as needed then bonds when pressed. It forms a hook and loop surface like Velcro. Little pricey at around $20 a can, works great for stuff like this.
