I swear I noticed a difference with my Flatland.  It definitely seemed more knocky sounding to me.

I did use foam on my KLX450r skid and it seemed to deaden some of the sound.  I just mostly wanted to fill the space so I wouldn't have 80 pounds of mud in there 

Doesn't seem necessary with the 690.
