Which model year to purchase 2012,2013,2014?
« on: November 10, 2014, 11:04:51 am »
This week my F800GS will be released from my garage.

I'll be looking for a used KTM 690 of which there are a few within a days travel.  Googling away there obviously were some major changes to the 14 model with the twin-spark, fly-by-wire, ABS (could do without), and suspension (?).

For primary off-road (two-track, and some single) use is there a model year that you recommend?

It really just depends on what you can find in your area.  When I was looking the availability was very limited, and the newer used bikes wanted nearly as much as the new bikes since they are so hard to get.  What worked for me was buying a new bike in the off season in February.  They were just so glad to sell a bike!  In my area, the 690's are sold out by May.

Thanks. Got a deal on a 2012 made pending the buyer for my 800 comes through tomorrow. With gear and some tools/parts I am about 235Lbs. What are recommendations for suspension or will stock be good?

I think you'll be fine depending how discerning/demanding you are.  I've not adjusted mine yet.  I feel like the rear is set fine, but the front end is a bit pogo-y, but not so much that I've felt the need to mess with it.

I weigh 225.

A bit late to influence the decision but post 2012 gives you the long service intervals.  I have a 2013 and a 2014 model.  I don't really notice any difference between them other than the 2014 has a gear indicator which, given the close ratio box, is quite useful.

I'm sorry I didn't mention this earlier, but I think the 2013 model hits the sweet spot.  It has the larger motor, the drive by wire throttle, and no ABS.

Well seeing as how I have a 2012 now it will have to do...  That said I did finally get to take it out for a spin yesterday. I can't believe how light it is. First impressions: engine feels weaker than what I anticipated, pegs are buzzy and grips were not, pretty sure I was smiling straight for an hour.   Day long rides are going to be tough on my checks (maybe both of them).

Get rid of the evap canister (if it has one),
Wire mod,
Set to power on under seat switch
Ditch the boat anchor exhaust

Hold on when you give it some noise!

I did the SAS mod (full), cannisterectomy, it has a FMF, currently a K&N while I wait for my air box lid, remapped at dealer by previous owner,  power setting on 3, will do the wire mod next.
Don't get me wrong I am happy with it - just didn't seem like a wheelie king.
