Weight Reduction
« on: December 22, 2013, 08:51:14 am »
A couple ideas to shed 13 pounds of high-placed weight.

Wings titanium exhaust: 4.05 pounds vs 10.8 pounds (stock)  http://www.alternatecycle.com/wings.html

Shoai Lithium Battery: 6.01 pounds vs 12.4 pounds (stock)  http://shoraipower.com/products?action=vehicle&type=175&make=1337&model=7981&year=7981

13.14 pounds weight savings for ~$650?  Seems like a deal to me!

The pipe and battery are a no brainer.  I could not believe the difference on another motorcycle when I swapped out the battery.  Just the other day I removed the metal exhaust shields while doing some work on my bike.  I didn't realize how heavy they really were.  I saw that carbon fiber shields were available but I don't remember from where.  Also Supersprox can take a bit off too in your next sprocket change.  The SAS and canister with associated plumbing is likely worth a pound or two if removing it is your pleasure.
Then we add racks and lights and we are back to the original weight. ;D

I'd guess the heat is more of a product of the bike being so lean outta the chute. I'd like to hear a report from someone with the stock pipe and a richer map.

Love my WINGS, but its tends to act cold blooded when starting up in cooler weather. I've never had it mapped, just installed it and did the idle start & run for 15 minutes expecting it to adjust itself BUT it still dies several times during the idle after start up until it gets warm. Anybody else have this issue?

I was riding with a group in Junction area & the KTM 950's Shoai Lithium Battery caught fire.  Seams several others have also.

I think the heat is mainly due to the catalytic converter in the stock can. Although the lean mapping wouldn't help.

But more on topic...I weighed mine on the weekend...dry weight here...

She weighs in at. 284.2 pounds!

I'm pretty happy with that result.

Nice!  What'd you do to cut weight?!  That's as light as my old WR250R!

Funny you mention the Wr, as the new one weighs about 128kg wet...which I wanted to get to dry with the ktm.

Remember that in Oz, we get the bikes without the smog gear as well...The bike started a touch over 138 kg dry (I weighed it after dropping the oil and fuel during its first service).

Some thing people will already know about but if any1 has anything else to suggest, I'm all ears.

Can, use a titanium model, I use wings as it's cheaper than its stable mate.
Battery, anti gravity
Replace stock fan with a much lighter one...there is an excellent post somewhere on the net about using a PC fan. I did this on a rallye bike back in 2008. As of 2013, the same fan was still going strong, in spite of pressure washing and soaking muddy enduros! Oh, and it weighed squat and drew less current than the stocker.
Tubliss front and back (saves 2.2 lbs per wheel over the UHD's I previously ran). I ride in Baja type terrain, with some nasty rock garden stuff and have **** many rims but not had puncture problems to date (fingers crossed)!
Ditch passenger pegs and brackets
Cut down rear fender
Ditch the chain guard
Ditch the mirrors for a single light weight plastic fold up version
Mod air box
Mod the heat shields on the exhaust (I drilled a series of holes in mine).
Rear sprocket...alloy
I also ditched the horn as I can shout louder, lol

A few others I can't remember offhand. But I'll try and post what I can remember.

I should also say that I only use the bike as a big enduro machine.

I usually tell other riders its a motocrosser on steroids! As such the major reason to mod my bike was not to increase hp, it was always to drop the kg's a bit but to pull off anything that will end up hanging from a tree or smashed on a rock.

The other big mod for mine was to change the suspension. Another story in itself.
