More EFI Mapping
« on: February 06, 2014, 10:58:05 am »
I know this is covered elsewhere ad nauseum but wanted to get this group's opinion.... I'm computer literate & understand the basics of EFI but must admit the whole EFI mapping issue has me totally confused.  From software to hardware to accomplish re-mapping, I find it difficult to follow.

So, is there a resource to educate myself about the basics of EFI mapping & the (KTM?) tools to do so?

My purpose in asking is because I'd like to replace the nuclear reactor on my upcoming 2014 690R with an aftermarket slip-on but know the fuel mixture will be off.  And, with the already stock lean settings, I'm afraid NOT to re-map if a new exhaust is fitted.

Any thoughts about EFI mapping sources that a BEGINNER can follow?

Many thanks in advance to the forum.  At least here I won't get a butt-chew for posting this in the wrong thread!   ???  Bob in AZ

I'm not sure about the technical blah blah of EFI but from what I have read & from my own experience as long as you only replace your "nuclear reactor" exhaust with another "cooler" one be it the entire header or simply a slip on all you'll need to do is start your bike up barn fresh or from sitting over night cold AFTER installing your new exhaust & let it idle for 15 minutes. The EFI should adjust itself. Of course depending on what brand you go with you may be able to use an Akropovic map (most ktm dealers should have them) and re-map your EFI that way. Personally I have a WINGS slip on and it runs fine. The only tome she's a little fussy is at idle on cold starts, once warm she purrs like a kitten. I've heard you can self adjust like this with LeoVance pipes too. Hope this helps

Thanks, Endo.  Is the EFI re-set process described in the Owner's Manual?  Nobody seems to know much about the 2014's but I'm sure it's the same as prior years.  And, any problem overheating at idle for 15 mins?  Thx for the post back....

I don't remember seeing the "reset" in the owners manual, however those instructions came directly from WINGS when I ordered it, and I've read the same info in other forums. Shouldn't overheat as the 690 has an electric fan that kicks on when she gets warm, sure the bike will get warm but nothing I'd worry about. WINGS also said the "Akro" mapping will work w/their pipe if you feel the need. One guy I talked to had a Leo pipe & he did the same cold start reset as described & told me he never had any issues either. I know KTM is high on the Akropovic exhaust systems (I read somewhere that KTM owns them, so that would make sense but don't know for a fact) but I chose the wings system because of reviews I've read & it was half the price of the Akro.  The bummer to the Wings so far is that like most dirt bike pipes it will need to be repacked at some point & I lost some top end (nothing a simple sprocket change won't fix).
The pro's of the Wings is it dissipates heat  CONSIDERABLY better than stock, sounds great, & livens up the bottom and mid range. Do a little research & let us know what you decide.  ;D

Thx again, Endo; all great feedback & it helps alot since this will be my first 690.  I'll ride the bike stock for a bit while I decide but, otherwise, maybe I'm worrying needlessly.  Meanwhile, I'm excited at Rusty's other post this morning about taking delivery of his 2014; means mine might be out west shortly.

The feedback about the Wings pipe was particularly helpful since I've read about them but know little.  Thx again!

No problem Bob, any other questions or whatever, shoot me an E-mail, I'm more than happy to share my experiences or opinions. Nothing worse than spending several hundred dollars on something and not liking it or wishing you had gone a different direction. My best suggestion is visit several different forums & find as many unbiased opinions as possible. Some guys become "Fan boys" simply because they own one & have a hard time admitting there are other good options out there, so do the research before you buy  ;D

I love my Wings.  She had about 600 miles when I put it on. Did the 15 min. & could tell a difference jUst going around the block.
I did the 15 thing after the 1000 ohm mod also.  No remapping required.

What's the "1000 ohm mod?"  That sounds like it could be it's own post.

defogging.
I found it on ADV post #25 of this link. http://www.advrider.com/forums/showthread.php?t=365940&page=2

I started to copy it over, but did not know your thoughts on that. I'll let you do that.  It works.
