Mine is a 2014, which was the first year with the fly-by-wire throttle and dual spark plugs, not sure about other years. Also, I removed the smog stuff primarily for weight savings, imo it looks fugly and since the euro versions don't have it, there's something inside of me that yearns to rip it off the bike.

A month or so after I bought the R, I took all the plastic and seat off to plan an upgrade path. After staring at the bike and researching the web, I decided the first round of weight saving was to toss the stock exhaust, battery, passenger pegs, the stock hand guards and smog equipment.

That's why I did what I did to my bike, ymmv.
