I have a full dirt helmet with the goggles and such, but it's not the best for street riding and (as I found out), it can about rip your neck off if you turn your head to look at something at speed. Also when riding when it is cold (it was 25 on my commute this morning), no way would I want a dirt helmet - my neck hurt just from the air that was getting in on my street helmet!
My street bike helmet is okay, but I wanted something a little nicer and more versatile that I could use everyday. I didn't really want to spend a fortune (i.e. $600+), but I wanted some nice features.
The one thing that's been a pain on my street helmet is the visor; I've got one clear and one dark mirror. I often leave when it is still dark out, and then it gets really bright later in the high-altitude of Colorado, so I wanted a helmet with an internal sun vision.
I am also a stickler for a full-face for full protection; here's what I cam up with:
Nolan - neat, but not sure about the strength of the mouth protection; did not look that substantial to me.
Shoei GT-Air
Looked nice and well made. Fit really tight on me and kind of expensive at about $500
I did like the Shark Vision-R BeCool a lot, it was my runner-up - Shark also makes the Bluetooth set-up to fit this helmet
This is what I did get - I like the features and the way it fit; also the price at $229. Looks sharp too.
Scorpion ECO-500 Heritage
I also got the extra smoke external visor and dark smoke internal visior.
Honorable mentions:
If you wear these, you are just plain cool!
One more interesting helmet is the Suomy MX tourer. It is a dirt bike helmet with a internal sun visor. I like it, but just wasn't sold on the visor, it just appeared to be more for looks. Also at $400, it was twice the cost of the Scorpion. However, I would say that it is worth checking out. The only place that seems to have it is Helmet City.
