Squadron XL Light
« on: January 04, 2014, 11:39:43 pm »
I don't have yet, but it's on my shortlist:

Has anyone tried the Baja Designs XL squadron light?  It looks awesome, and can be tamed with a dimmer switch.  At full glory, I wonder how favorably it would compare to an 8" race light?

It won't fit a 2012+ model year

Web sites often don't give all the info what we want for specific bikes.  Did Baja Designs tech people tell you that it would not fit the later models 690 Enduro R?

I ordered it, and it doesn't fit. When I called to return it, that's when they told me it won't work

Lame, did they stick you on the refund?  What year is your 690?

No, BD is a VERY REPUTABLE outfit. I got a full refund, and they even covered return shipping. I have ZERO complaints about BD.

And yes, it will fit a 2010

I'm sure they'll be glad to hear it.  I just emailed BD and asked them to join this discussion.  Specifically, I was hoping to know if they plan to produce Squadron XL lights that will fit the 2014 KTM Enduro R.

Thank you for the email, and I am glad to be apart of your community here. We currently do not have a LED light that is compatible with the KTM 690 Enduro R ( 2012-2014), due to mounting issues. I will talk to our engineering department and see what we can do in the future to adapt the Squadron XL for those 690s and get back to you guys. Thanks again for the kind words.- Christian,

Hi Chris,

Great that you're on this forum!  I've been looking at your light too.  Please DO let us know when your engineers get this ironed out--I'll happily volunteer to test a demo unit ;)

Also interested!
Email sent to BD.  I'll report back with their reply as to fit on 2012+ machines.
The good news is BD is working on it.

From BD:  We unfortunately do not offer a a Squadron that will fit on your bike. We are trying to produce a Squadorn that will work on that model. The main issue is clearing the Speedometer unit, thanks – Christian

Over on ADVRider when I asked the same question about lighting options a fellow, not too far from me actually, mounted a Squadron XL using a 2012 500EXC mask and creative bracket making.

Moto Minded, motominded.com, sells lighting kits using Baja Designs lights.  They also have other accessories for the 690 Enduro.  Here's the link to the Squadron XL kit:

Per their web site, the motominded folks above are using 3-D printers to make up a lot of the stuff they sell.  Amazing how this new technology is getting into the everyday world.  Good for us, gives a small shop a chance to bring products to market in a much shorter time and cost than traditional molds, etc

I have air filters being shipped from Australia and tank bolts from Serbia - the world is getting to be a very small place!

So very cool - I guess at 59 years old I am showing my age~

I remember seeing a comment about the strength of the brackets that Motominded make for their light kits, which are 3D printed. I'm not sure which plastic they are using.  I know they aren't 3D printing them in metal.  That equipment costs $100K+.  I have a friend who does 3D printing, among other things for a living, and he explained the differences in plastics available for printing, and how you can "orient" the grain of the part for strength. Neat stuff.
