Replacement 12v battery?
« on: May 20, 2016, 02:42:11 pm »
Strange thing today.....   Have not ridden the bike in a few weeks (that sucks) - but it started fine this morning and rode it to work.  Tried to go to lunch and wouldn't crank.  After 30 mins of messing around trying to figure out why, found it was the battery!  All lights came on, all fuses ok etc.
First I got a "dat 14" error.  Could not figure out what the heck that was.   Tried it again a few mins later and finally saw 'soft 4.1  dat 14' on the dash.  Looked that up to find it was related to low battery.    Managed to jumped it and rode home to put it on the batteryminder charger.
SO....   thoughts on why it would start in the morning and not at lunchtime?   Temps this am in the mid 50's, lunchtime low 70's.

SO (#2) ......   replace with similar battery, OR switch over to Lithium iron?   Was looking those up and almost fell out of my chair.  $170-$220 for the battery and I will need to get another charger - $70-100.  OEM battery is 7lbs, Lithium iron batts are 2.2lbs or so.   saving almost 5lbs
Was looking at the earthX and Shorai batteries.

Suggestions / comments?

Hey truck11,

I went with a LiPo and haven't had any issues. The new battery went in at the same time the full exhaust and the two mods combined made a noticeable improvement in the rear suspension. The LiPo's are smaller than the stock battery and I used the foam packing from the box it was shipped in to hold it in place. Lastly, here's a pick of the LiPo in the battery relocation kit. The kit is designed to hold the stock shaped battery so you can see the size difference.

Oh, and you can see the now-recycled-twice foam holding it on top. :)

Well let's see here....

Here's the link to the EVO 2 kit. I bought the "Battery Bracket Only" for $5.99 and made my own cables as they didn't have the $14.99 option when I purchased. However, there are two positive cables stock, one 6gauge stranded and another that's made up of two 14g wires. So I'm not sure what the $14.99 gets you. The 3 feet of 6g and battery terminal-ish ends were sub-$20 at Home Depot and I had some 14g laying around so extending the cables is pretty cheap and easy to do. Oh, for the negative, no extension is necessary as once you loosen the terminating ground to the frame, it'll rotate around and reach to the new location.

I went with the higher capacity Full Spectrum P3 for a battery upgrade. I've wired in a Voyager nav unit and four usb ports to power/charge various devices, so I figured I'd go with the extra juice of the 360.

Here's a couple more pics of it all installed:

I forgot to mention that I've removed all the SAS stuff including scraping the black triangle-shaped box on the inside left front of the bike. The box collects gas/fluid expelled from the crankcase and runs it back through the motor on the US models. The liquid drops back into the top of the cylinder and the gases go back into the airbox.  You can see the red K&N filter connected to the crankcase vent tube in the pics I posted above. I used a block off plate to get ride of the inlet on the top of the cylinder so the box was pointless to keep and came off by scraping it off of the black cover.

Anyway, the point is, you might have trouble sticking the battery relocation kit in that space without removing the triangle shaped piece from that left side black cover.

So here's a shot of the P3 batter installed in the normal battery location under the silver ecu mount:
