ABS fuse deletion
« on: August 30, 2015, 06:33:45 pm »
I have a 2014 690. ABS on this bike is overkill and a pain in the a**. I got weary of pushing the button every time I fire it up plus half the time I'd forget until I got to the first gravel road corner. To eliminate the hassle I pulled the three fuses associated with the ABS. With these fuses gone I'm happy with the braking. The only two problems are that the yellow ABS light stays on and the odo doesn't register speed or mileage. The light doesn't bother me, but not having a speedo or mileage does. Anybody know a fix for the problem other than spending $120 for a don gull?

I'm not sure of any other "fixes" for the issue. I bought the KTM dongle that plugs in. I have set my ABS the way I want it (front wheel - ABS enabled, rear wheel - ABS disabled) and everything works. It's that way each time I start the bike and take off. The speedo and odometer all work fine. I know it's $120 dollars. But in my mind this is one of those electronic things that ya just bite the bullet and do it. Then you never look back and there are no mysterious issues on the road.
Once I wrapped my mind around the ABS off-road I like it. Ride into the corner HARD - grab a handful of brake and shut it down. No drama - just ride. What a change from the old DT Enduro days. :)

I'm leaning toward doing this as well.  I didn't like the feel of the ABS in the dirt at all, at least not on the rear.  I'm used to riding moto on tracks and the first time I hit rear brake, I was expecting a lock-up and got the opposite.  I know it can be turned off, but I didn't do it  :-\    it would be nice to flip a switch and have it done...

Trailpioneer, if you decide to bite the bullet and get the dongle, I recommend buying it through Munnracing.com.  They give a 5% discount on their site, but if you are registered at KTMTalk.com forum, you can link into Munn racing and get 25% off.  I have the dongle and run it like Kingrider.  You still have to deal with a flashing ABS light on the dash (slow flash= front ABS, faster flash= no ABS) and you can't turn the ABS to completely on without disconnecting the dongle.

Ok, update on eliminating the fuses. I put the small 10amp fuse back in and left the large 15 and 25 amp fuses out. Speedo and mileage counters all work! Front and rear brakes now operate with no ABS. I went for a 100 mile ride today without any problem. I feel much more in control now. The front brake is pretty strong without ABS pulsating it ,but that's the way I like it.

Actually you can set it to full ABS on without disconnecting the dongle. Put the kill switch to on, turn on the key, turn kill switch off and start. You will have full ABS front and rear. Want rear ABS only again? Turn kill switch off, turn on the key start and you will have rear only.

The no flashing, slow flashing or fast flashing ABS lamp on the dash will let you know which mode your in!

Hey Oldfellow, thanks for that info.  I didn't see that in the instructions supplied with the dongle.

I used to turn my ABS off all the time thinking "whats that #$%^ on a dirtbike for anyways?" But learn to use the force I have & it is good!!  Once I gave myself a chance to get used to it I found I can ride harder into corners with much more confidence. The other plus is when your head isn't totally in the game ABS WILL save your a$$ from a UPS truck that pulls out of a blind driveway that you are approaching on gravel way too fast... Not that I would know..
Nut up or shut up!

If you want the rear ABS off without spending $ or having to remember to do the 3 second ABS dash button press every time you start the bike then all you need to do is remove the rear ABS sensor from the rear caliper mount, wind up the cable and cable tie it up under the battery box.

This will let you lock up the rear all the time with no pre-start procedures, however the ABS light stays on.

I was amused by the ABS, I like it on the front as it prevents a relatively heavy bike washing out, but the rear not locking got me in trouble once when I had to do a high speed evasive manoeuvre on the dirt, I needed to change direction and wash off speed fast so I wanted the rear to lock so i could throw it sideways, the ABS on the rear just had me heading deeper into strife than I liked.

Ive just bought and fitted a SCOTTS rear disc guard shark fin, I didnt know it was designed for pre ABS 690's because it doesnt have the mounting point for the ABS sensor, which is why Ive removed the ABS sensor and coiled it under the Battery.
I will cut the ABS mount section off the stock caliper mount and get it welded onto the SCOTTS disc guard, may as well have it working and I dont like the ABS light being on all the time.
I'm not as good as I once was, but I'm as good once as I ever was.
