Flatland Skid Plate
« on: December 22, 2013, 12:49:52 pm »
Well I got my new skidplate on today. Let's see how long this one lasts! If anyone can test the integrity and durability of this stuff I think it's me!

Thanks again to dad2bike for recommending this plate. It's less than half of what I paid for my Rally Raid plate and is actually much beefier. It has metal pins welded to the rear instead of using the factory plastic ones and the front mounting tabs are much thicker too. With my M2W discount through Dual Sport Armory it was only $93 shipped to my door.

I have the Flatland Skid plate.  On a recent ride in a rocky section of Death Valley I bashed the rear section at the right side rear mounting.  The plate did not break but it did bend and the motorcycle's mount did suffer a change in shape.  A few more inches rearward and the brake master would have suffered damage.  I believe there should be protection for the brake master too.

On KTMtwins there's a protection device for $40. Looks worth gambling on.

I layed my 08E down on a fireroad a few months back and bent the lever all to ****. luckily the master cylinder didn't get ripped off. It's on my purchase list.

The skid plate on my bike has an extension which covers the rear master cylinder. It is just a rectangular piece of aluminum. I don't know what brand it is because it isn't marked and came with the bike.

The extension piece looked like it was used in battle because it was ****. I took it to a guy down the street that advertised welding and he welded it back up for $20. So you could probably add something to the flatland to cover that area relatively inexpensively if you take it to a local welder.

Interesting to see the different mounting at the rear of the flat lands skid and the one that is pictured with the master cylinder guard (not the MS guard, but the main skid)

I have the Flatland skid & love it.  It's made from brushed 3/16" aluminum & looks like God did the welding..  It's just under 4 pounds making it about 2.5 pounds heavier then the OEM skid. Not bad for the benefits of protection but then there's a side benefit that it's flat on the bottom so you can put the bike on a stand now!  The OEM skid is angled so your bike will fall over if the skid is rested on a flat surface.  Also.. I have the R&G case covers & the left cover did contact the skidplates left "wing" when I first installed it.. A bit of persuasion with a block of wood & a small sledge hammer used on the skid made an adequate amount of clearance.
Nut up or shut up!
