Alternative to Akro -- Wings
« on: December 22, 2013, 07:25:42 am »
I love the look of the Akropovic pipe, but my lottery numbers failed! >:(

I found this: The Wings Exhaust system for $515.00 (American) from a Canadian website: http://www.alternatecycle.com/wings.html

jwat (in a later post below) said they could be had for a $100 less if you buy direct: http://www.wings.si/ver3/index.html?page=details

It looks just like the Akro!  Anybody know if it's as good?

Love mine Rusty, the fit & finish look as nice as the Akro in my opinion, simple to install. Sounds great, throaty but not obnoxious. MUCH MUCH cooler (heat wise) the only downer is you will need to repack it down the road like a typical dirt bike exhaust. But I believe you have to do the same to the Akro as well? but heck you just saved $500 by switching to WINGS  :D

I love the look of that pipe!  Did you have to modify the fuel map?  Did you modify the intake at all?

 Thanks in advance!

No 690chick, no modified anything. Wings says you don't need to remap anything but that you can use the Akro mapping if you want to. The instructions tell you to install using the stock header, then to start the bike (preferably from sitting cold over night) and let it idle for 15 minutes. The bike should self adjust. The only difference I have noticed on my bike after installing the wings pipe is she tends do die a couple of times after a cold start up (kinda like a carbureted bike when cold) but once warm she runs & starts just fine.

Have you seen this: http://www.ktm-parts.com/76506102000.html#.Uvq4FHlxK58

I wonder if this air box cover, plus the Akro map, plus the Wings pipe would result in something...

...GLORIOUS!!!

Supposedly, both Akrapovik and Wings sound identical.

I have had Wings Exhaust on both my 690's and have been very happy.  I did find that I could save about $100 by ordering directly from the manufacturer in Europe instead of ordering from the dealer in Canada.  For some reason there are no dealers in the US.

They gave me great service and quick response and even included a nice Wings T shirt with my pipe.

Good info jwat, thanks!

When I stopped by my dealer yesterday, they said KTM no longer supplied the "open" map that would allow the 690 to run an open pipe and air box.  He said KTM got fined by the EPA and forced KTM to close that loophole.  I just emailed Wings directly and asked whether they would supply an updated map with their pipe that could be user/dealer uploaded.  I'll report here as soon as I hear anything.

If the Wings exhaust is the only mod you have made to your 690, you can use the Akro map which you can get for free from Tune ECU here:

http://www.tuneecu.com/

Other maps are also available.  I run the Evo 1 map on mine which has been de-smogged, etc.  Runs great.  You can load the map yourself with the correct cable from you laptop.  You can also do other analysis.  Check here to learn how:  http://www.advrider.com/forums/showthread.php?t=931664

May work for 08-13 but he has a 2014. No maps have been posted for this version and may not be because it has not been shown that TuneECU will work with the latest model.

Hey all,

I wrote an email to Wings asking whether their product was compatible with the 2014 model.  This is their response:

thanks for your request. in stock now NOS non oval shape with carbon end cap 60% lighter and cool to the touch. includes 2 core options. 28mm like stock sound and 32mm much better throttle response, both with spark screens. 550$ just send card# and exp date and complete shipping address. no remapp needed for use with cores.  www.tuneecu.com  has maps for mod bikes.  we offer the cable to use your lap top to the ecu 65$  thanks kenny darvin

I replied requesting clarification on whether this cable would interface with the 2014 model given that KTM has changed its ECU this year.  I'll report any response I get.

Have to wonder if the 2014 model year part got through as I thought NOS stood for "New Old Stock" and some aspect of the muffler mount did change for 2014, though perhaps not the frame part.

Hey McNut,

I think NOS stands for "Non-Oval Pipe."

Anyway, they got back to me:

Thanks for your reply the 2104 690 does not need a remapp with the wings.  Either core will work great!  Only if you modify or remove the air box will it need a remapp.  This is not worth the effort as the gain is small and increase the fuel consumption too much.  We offer the DNA air filter 90$ and doesnt need a reampp plus 3 HP.  This is more then the mod lid offers without the hassel of remapp. I will reserve a pipe for you. Let me know about the DNA filter! I havent tried the cable on the 2104 yet.  What is your plan to use this bike for? Thanks kenny darvin!

So really, I'd imagine that the pipe will save weight, be cooler (to the touch), and sound cool.  BTW, in my response I told him I intended to use the bike for "general hooliganism." ;D

IS ANYONE INTERESTED IN A GROUP BUY?  I'll bet they'd give us a break if we could guarantee an order of 5 or more.
